RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis"
Debut: Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Episode 1 (OVA series, 1991)
Description: Following the One Year War the Earth Federation contracted Anaheim Electronics to build testbed Gundam-model mobile suits, one of which was the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis" deployed in UC 0083. However, remnant Zeon forces stole the Physalis and the Gundam soon became instrumental in a new space conflict. The "Physalis" was built for tactical nuclear warfare using a large atomic bazooka capable of launching a strategic-use Mark-82 nuclear warhead. The Gundam was both heavily armored and carried a shield with cooling systems to withstand the nuclear blast unleashed by its bazooka. Yet the Gundam also possessed enough thrust for high speed and maneuverability and carried beam sabers and vulcan cannons for close combat. The RX-78GP02A was made famous by ace pilot Anavel Gato as part of Operation Stardust in which two-thirds of the Federation fleet gathered at the Konpeitoh asteroid base was destroyed by the "Physalis" nuclear warhead.
Original mechanical designer: Shoji Kawamori (woohoo!)
