  • Description and History

The EX-Gear is a reinforced-exoskeleton and powered suit built for a variety of purposes including pilot suit system, variable fighter cockpit interface and combat support. The New Unified Forces Special Works Department in cooperation with L.A.I. designed a specially-modified/enhanced version of the military-grade EX-Gear in limited numbers for the New Unified Forces Special Forces Troops. The Special Forces EX-Gear features numerous design improvements over the standard issue military version including enhanced optical/acoustic sensors and composite material construction for improved maneuverability, reduced weight and faster flight speed. However, the primary advantage of the Special Forces EX-Gear would be the modifications for silent operation. Silencing measures reduce operating noise of the gliding wheels in the feet and hover unit in the backpack as well as the virtually silent operation of the joints and actuators. The resulting EX-Gear is so silent it can go undetected even against cyborg soldiers with senses keener than a normal human's. In addition, the Special Forces EX-Gear is outfitted with a full set of self-adhesive camouflage decals that can be removed and changed according to mission requirements. This makes the EX-Gear perfect for covert operations, infiltration and other subversive roles. Unsurprisingly, the existence of this modified EX-Gear isn't disclosed to the public.

The Special Forces EX-Gear was a notable success in modifying the hardware to emphasize its operation as a combat powered suit rather than just a pilot suit system. Its greatest features are said to be the adoption of Implant technology and anti-Cyborg soldier armaments. The Anti-Cyborg Rifle is a standard-issue rifle modified for use against cyborg soldiers through use of overpressure ammunition with an exclusive coating on the shells. It also has a grenade launcher and harpoon gun, the latter being used to suppress the movements of cyborg soldiers via implant technology within the harpoon. Following the Vajra attack of the Macross Galaxy fleet, refugee ships transported evacuation groups to the Macross Frontier fleet including covert Galaxy Fleet cyborg soldiers. The cyborg's goal was to infiltrate and take over the Frontier fleet, but Leon Mishima became aware of their plans and coordinated an effort to contain and suppress them. When the cyborg infiltrators made their move, the Special Forces Teams deployed in their modified EX-Gear subdued the infiltrators in short order. Colonel Grace Godunuv (aka, Grace O'Connor) was among those infiltrators outwitted and captured by the Special Forces teams and their EX-Gear.

The name "EX" is short hand for "Extender"
