The Altira was a large construct found partially submerged in the ocean on Earth after the first Zentradi bombardment of Space War I. The structure was designed for human-sized inhabitants and was utilized by exiles of the Protoculture, those few that chose to flee the horrendous Zentradi/Meltrandi Wars to create a civilization on Earth. Though underwater for nearly 20,000 years, Altira still possessed some functioning equipment and the city computer was able to surface the city above water. The city was a massive disc-shaped platform some 8 kilometers in diameter and possessed numerous structures and machinery to sustain a large population.
Altira was a Protoculture installation, the Protoculture itself being a vast interstellar civilization with very advanced knowledge of genetic engineering. Eventually, the men and women of the Protoculture were able to reproduce themselves asexually. The two genders, the males known as Zentradi and the females as Meltrandi, segregated and waged terrible wars upon each other. They created giant warriors to fight but when the wars became too intense some started to see reason, abandoning the idea of a conflict with the potential to destroy the entire Protoculture civilization. These exiles chose to start over, with men and women in coexistence on worlds far removed from the interstellar wars. One such world was the planet Earth and once the exiles arrived on the planet, they manipulated the genes of the indigenous species, creating the ancestors of modern humans. Roughly 20,000 years ago, the war reached the Sol system and so the exiles submerged Altira to hide it then temporarily left Earth. For reasons unknown, the exiles were unable to return and Altira remained hidden underwater until the city computer mistook the Zentradi attack in Space War I as a sign the exiles return, raising city in response.
Misa Hayase and Hikaru Ichijo found Altira during exploration of the oceans upon the devastated Earth. Once investigated, the two activated some of Altira's systems in an attempt to use the ancient city to communicate with the SDF-1 Macross. The Altira still had massive power generation capability and in response to the two humans the automated systems resurfaced the entire installation above the ocean surface. These still functional systems contained holographic records and may have revealed much information about the Protoculture, but sadly the city was destroyed by a Zentradi assault shortly after Misa and Hikaru were rescued by the SDF-1 Macross.
