VF-1J Valkyrie SVF-41 "Black Aces"
Debut: (never animated, appears in This Is Animation Special Macross Plus, page 83, 1995)
Description: The VF-1J Valkyrie squadron SVF-41 "Black Aces" appears as a custom color scheme within the book This Is Animation Special Macross Plus; 1995. The SVF-41 "Black Aces" colors strongly resemble Strike Fighter Squadron 103 (VFA-103), nicknamed the Jolly Rogers, an aviation unit of the United States Navy established in 1952. The Jolly Rogers have some of the most famous squadron markings in the world: a white skull-and-crossbones on all-black tails, with gold bands wrapped around the tip of the tail fins, and black bands with gold chevrons along the sides of the forward fuselage. The SVF-41 "Black Aces" share similar colors but feature a yellow band with black borders upon the forward fuselage and a two-tone paint scheme with grey atop the aircraft while the bottom is painted white. Adopting the same colors as a famous real aviation unit has made the fictional "Black Aces" a Macross fan favorite for years.
OFFICIAL TRIVIA This Is Animation Special Macross Plus, page 83, 1995: The SVF-41 was assigned to the RANGER, the seventh ARMD Class space carrier that had just been launched in October 2009, and participated in the battle against Bodolzaa the following year. The photo (see image below) shows the craft at that time. It is painted in navy blue with light gray on top and white on the bottom, likely because it had been converted to the VF-1 model not long ago. The squadron color yellow is used abundantly on the nose stripe, rudder, wing tips, and tail lettering. The letters are black and only the ARMD-07 on the tail is white.
