    Description and History

The warship class that would eventually become the ARMD was originally constructed as a rig and floating station for space fighters deployed in geosynchronous satellite orbit and at locations such as the Lagrange Points. As the restoration plan of the Alien Starship-1 progressed on Earth, these rigs were diverted to be the carrier-based aerospace craft operating platforms for the restored Alien ship. The ARMD Class is both an offensive and defensive platform - with capabilities exceeding modern aircraft carriers - that fulfilled those same roles as part of the SDF-1 Macross. Though hurriedly constructed as remodeled space fighter rigs, these carrier-based military force stations were incorporated into the SDF-1 Macross strategic system and docked with the ship on December 2008.

The upper hull structure of the ARMD characteristically flat like other such carrier vessels was adopted so that it is easy to deploy shipborne aerospace craft. Despite being built with OverTechnology propulsion and power systems, the hull design was exceedingly simple. As such, the ARMD ships could be built quickly, as was required when the first ARMD ships were needed to combine with the SDF-1 Macross. When these platforms were improved/upgraded from a Space Fighter Rig to an ARMD spaceship they had various mechanisms added. These additions included a bridge to control the ship, a docking module for connection to the SDF-1 and a drive system for the collection of shipborne craft lacking the capability to return to base.

Final outfitting continued to advance on the SDF-1 Macross with the capability as an emigrant ship that would accommodate 50,000 emigrants on South Ataria Island and the ship was ready for the space launch ceremony on February 2009. The first ships ARMD-01 and ARMD-02 are mirror images of each other; the bridge is mounted starboard side on ARMD-01 and the bridge is mounted port side on the ARMD-02. This layout of the 01 and 02 ARMD ships was decided to better integrate the two ships with the SDF-1. Though both ARMD craft have the capability to maneuver and cruise independently it is unconfirmed if either vessel ever did so during the return journey of the SDF-1 Macross back to Earth (Macross Chronicle 2E Mechanic Sheet DYRL UNS 08A "ARMD").

*Macross Journal Extra: Sky Angels: VF-1 Valkyrie Special Edition (1984) page 57 and Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie Vol. 1 (2009) page 94 list the named ARMD Class ships.
**Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie Vol. 2 (2010) page 100 (and other pages) list several more named ARMD Class ships. Variable Fighter Master File VF-0 Phoenix (2012) page 27, 123 mentions the ARMD-00 Constitution.
