Notes

Debut: Fan made; this is NOT an official design
Description: Decades of development in OverTechnology changed the variable fighter battlefield in many ways. New methods to both detect and avoid detection brought about by OverTechnology continued deployment on the latest variable fighters. But for every development in electronic counter measures (ECM) such as active stealth, increasing use of super/cross-dimensional radar and other gravity wave passive detection suites would help foil such defenses. Combat was often reduced to medium-to-short ranges, but outright stealth was impossible. So it was that U.N. Spacy military scientists tried to advance stealth technology to produce far more effective systems. Largely, research into these areas proved futile.

Despite failure, one short-range stealth technology was developed from research efforts; a system called Direct-Light Camouflage. This stealth system possessed only minor advantages beyond traditional active stealth systems, but DLC did provide an advantage in short-range visual detection. Working in conjunction with the energy converting armor systems standard on all variable fighters, DLC causes the hull of the variable fighter to turn opaque when exposed to light. Though of limited use in environments of extremes such as in an atmosphere or deep space, the DLC system proved incredibly useful in orbit and within solar systems. Though the craft still produces shadows (even upon itself) the result is remarkably pronounced. Visual detection of a DLC Valkyrie becomes very difficult against the background of space and is a more effective defense than low-visibility hulls.

The VF-19A was the first variable fighter to be equipped Direct-Light Camouflage and was designated as the Stalker. Though the DLC technology did prove practical and very low maintenance, the limited operational usefulness of the system did not convince UN Spacy command to adopt the technology for mass-production.
