VF-11C Armored "Drop Boxers" Notes Debut: Fan made; this is NOT an official design Description: The Protect Armor system for the VF-11C Thunderbolt found extensive use as versatile heavy combat units for planetary assaults. Variable fighters had long been used in multi-role operations, but were often found lacking in heavy assault roles. Common practice in such cases was to outfit existing variable fighters with space/atmospheric Super Part systems. However, when it came to heavy combat after orbital insertion, increased firepower and additional armor were greater assets than maneuverability or speed. VF-11C Armored units could be deployed in orbit and drop into enemy-controlled zones planet-side while able to deal with strong defensive fire. Once on the ground, each VF-11C Armored unit acted as a mobile heavy weapons vehicle or "box" equipped for front line attack. Hence these squadrons garnered the nickname "Drop Boxers" for their ability to drop on top of the enemy and engage in heavy short-range combat. The designation is also a humorous in-joke from the idea of "catching the enemy with their pants (boxers) down"
